MICROPLASTIC Solutions For HEalthy Oceans: JOIN A CLEAN ADVENTURES OREGON BEACH CLEANUP

Sand Cleaning Machine Oregon Beach Cleanup At A Time

Plastic floating on the west coast beaches is nothing new but during winter months with king tides of Oregon and western winds the ocean currents float plastic onto beaches with about every ocean wave. The solution to cleaning up the ocean starts will the discovery of what microplasics looks like and how to pick it up on a beach. Ocean Blue opens the weekends to community Oregon Beach Cleanup Events for anyone who would like to dig in the sand. Some children enjoy using Oregon micro systems like hand strainers, to just picking up small colorful micro pieces of plastic. The main goal is to remove as much as possible before the plastic degrades even smaller and washes back to sea.

After using marine sand sifters for several years our researchers have discovered just using water in a large tank allows plastic to float and the sand to sink. We are developing a mobile marine sand sifter as a sand cleaning machine to help remove tons of plastic off west coast beaches.

Ocean Blue is working with nature and uses water and when we add a shovel of sand to the bucket of water the sand sinks and plastic floats allowing our team to scoop the unwanted plastic off the surface of the water and leave the sand right on the beach.

Kelsey Holowati Board Member of Ocean Blue Project's Oregon Chapter Saving The Ocean

by Richard Arterbury
Kelsey Holowati volunteers to help youth and communities as board member of Ocean Blue Project
Kelsey Holowati board member of Ocean Blue Project
Meet Kelsey Holowati board member of Ocean Blue Project.
Kelsey is a native Oregonian and proud dog-mom of three with a passion for the outdoors. A Leader at a large Healthcare organization during the week, you will typically find Kelsey stomping around the woods of Central Oregon, taking in the beauty of Mt. Hood, or enjoying the splendors of the Oregon Coast on the weekends. Kelsey has been increasingly alarmed and saddened by the reality of the plastic waste crisis that is littering our Oregon Coastline, and she has been called to preserve the beauty that Oregon has to offer. Kelsey found Ocean Blue Project in the Spring of 2018 when planning a vacation to Beverly Beach, and it was there in July of 2018 and with the support of OBP that Kelsey performed her first beach clean up. She involved about 18 volunteers and gathered approximately 25lbs of waste, on what looked like an otherwise clean beach. This sparked Kelsey’s involvement with OBP and she has since been a part of their #goingstrawless campaign and plans to host quarterly cleanups along the Northern OR Coastline throughout 2019.

The Importance Of the JOSHUA Tree That Are Being DESTROYED on GOVERNMENT Land

by Richard Arterbury
JoshuaTree photo taken by Larry McAfee
The current Government Shutdown Is Affecting Wildlife Animals like birds, insects, lizards, and today we are seeing old growth Joshua Trees being destroyed in Joshua Tree National Park. This tree has so many benefits for both wildlife and humans. Reading a few blogs on tweeter reveal that others don't blame the shutdown, instead blaming people with black hearts.

A Joshua Tree is a very large yucca that grows in areas of elevations at 1,300 to 5,900 feet. These trees are well adapted to the Mohave High Desert. Dead leaves from the tree fall to the base of the trunk to help protect this part of the tree from the sun.

The channeled leaves collect and help in dew placement during rainfall, directing water to the tree roots. In the day time at Joshua Tree National Park you will see ground squirrels, blizzards, and birds and after dark you can see snakes, big horn sheep, kangaroo rats, coyotes, mule Deer, black tailed jack rabbits, lynx, and so many more that depend on the habitat of our Joshua Trees. Over 25 birds species nest in Joshua Trees. The yucca moth is the local pollinator of the Joshua Trees. At the end of the Ice Age over 11,700 years ago, Ground Sloths would carry seeds around and become the main dispersers of the Joshua Tree Seeds. Nowadays, wind and mammals help disperse the seeds.

JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK DISTRACTION

Take your stand and let's not allow our National Parks to be destroyed. Please leave your comments and how would you like to see Ocean Blue protecting our native trees in the Untied States?

Joshua trees bring immense value to wildlife of the Mojave Desert. While there have been various reports of concern against the individuals who have destroyed trees in Joshua Tree National Park, Ocean Blue is also holding the current administration responsible for the tragic events.

"Donald Trump is directly destroying wildlife habitat, our waterways, and our National Monuments in the United States, and the people have not rioted one time to stop it." Richard Arterbury, founder and director of Ocean Blue says. He adds that, "until we the people realize that we have the power, such tragedies will continue to happen in the United States."

Oregon State Plastic Bag Ban in 13 Cities saving the ocean from plastic pollution

by Richard Arterbury
Plastic Bags stuck in trees
The State of Oregon has thirteen cities that have banned the use of plastic bags in grocery stores. Ocean Blue feels nonprofits placing logos on plastic bags is sending mixed messages to volunteers and our youth of the communities, and we should tell all nonprofits not to purchase plastic bags with donations from our communities. If you know of a nonprofit that uses plastic bags for logo placement please request they stop supporting plastic bags in our state.  Thirteen doesn't sound like a larger number however the Oregon cities that have banned plastic bags are the larger areas where tons of plastic bags were being used. Links below from Bag Laws of Oregon.

  • Ashland
  • City of Manzanita
  • Corvallis
  • Eugene
  • Forest Grove
  • Hood River
  • Manzanita
  • McMinnville
  • Milwauke
  • Newport
  • Portland
  • Salem
  • Bend

Ocean Blue has noticed where plastic bags are banned we don't have to pick them up in our local rivers or in our community and where plastic bags are supported we find them blowing in trees, waterways, and by roadways. If you support Oregon Plastic Bag Ban give this post a like and share the Ocean Blue Environmental News!

Tribal Nations, Government Shutdown Affecting Everyone and maybe someone you know like the Director Of Ocean Blue

"The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma is dedicated to the well being of its tribal members, and has a plan in place to prevent any disruptions of necessary services, " the tribe said in a written statement.
After almost two weeks since a partial shutdown of the federal government. President Trump is still not willing to compromise on his demand to build a wall along the nation's border between Mexico and the United States. "The United States needs a physical barrier. " Trump stated. As a child I remember removing the wall of Europe and how happy everyone was but doesn't seem this wall has many stopping this or even believing this is actually is taking place.

So how does this shutdown affect Oklahoma's 5 Indian Nation's? Choctaw and Chickasaw living on the reservation are staying strong during the shutdown. Larger tribes are more resilient over smaller tribes with less funding from within. Often times many tribal members do not reside on a reservation like my self and we depend on services through Indian Health Services. The Indian Health Service, a federal agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, depends on federal dollars to help tribal hospitals.

The services my family depends on is located in Salem Oregon. I have a family of three and we visit Chemawa Health Center for our general doctor, eye, and dental. I will admit the services are often the best over using local medical centers.

As I spend everyday working to cleanup the environment our government the one that is set up to protect our nation is today trashing our nation with excess litter of our President having a shit fit over building a wall to not allow what once our nation stood for and that is freedom for all. A proposed bill H.R. 7362 is in process in hope to provide a stable source of funding for the Indian Health Service.
