Welcome to Ocean Blue Project, a grassroots 501c3 nonprofit organization with a compelling mission – to rehabilitate and conserve the world’s oceans, beaches, and rivers. We work to keep pollutants from entering ecosystems through the recovery of plastics from ocean, beach, and river clean-ups, solutions, collaborative community-driven service learning projects, and youth education. Our commitment to a cleaner, healthier ecosystem drives our work, and we empower individuals and communities to join us in this vital mission.

Who founded Ocean Blue Project?

Founded in 2012 in Newport, Oregon, Ocean Blue Project is an environmental nonprofit dedicated to protecting our One World Ocean. Ocean Blue Project began as the vision of Richard and Fleet Arterbury, proud enrolled tribal members of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. When they heard that Oregon State University students needed the support of a 501c3 organization to host beach cleanups, the Arterburys formed Ocean Blue Project to give them the organizational support they needed.

What does the Ocean Blue Project do?

The Ocean Blue Project community has grown to include hundreds of volunteers around the United States – people just like you that have come together to fight for a healthy ocean. Supported by the generosity of individual donors, business partners and the talent of dedicated mentors, Ocean Blue Project makes it possible for people from any age, background, or experience level to make a difference for our planet.

At Ocean Blue Project, we use a multifaceted approach to achieve our mission. Our work includes:

  • Plastic Disaster Relief Projects: Ocean Blue is removing millions of pounds of plastic with goals to expand recycling operations and collection facilities to keep plastic out of landfills and our one world Ocean.
  • Community-Led Beach and River Ocean Cleanup Projects: Beach and river cleanups are a central part of our ocean cleanup project. We empower Cleanup Crews across the country to plan and execute local cleanup events. We provide necessary equipment and support, making it easy for you to organize a beach or river clean up in your community.
  • OBP Blue Schools STEAM Curriculum and Service Learning Projects: OBP Blue Schools program is STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) learning, engaging K-12 students in environmental stewardship. Students and teachers participate in hands-on activities, experiments, and community cleanup events that emphasize the importance of protecting our environment.
  • Research Partnerships: We collaborate with a retired NASA scientist and university researchers to develop innovative solutions, such as mycofiltration, which uses fungi-powered filtration systems to improve water quality and reduce pollution. Ocean Blue Project continues to support research projects that investigate practical local solutions to pollution problems.

Is the Ocean Blue Project legit?

The roots symbolize using fungi and mycorrhizae in the restoration of aquatic environments. These organisms form a symbiotic relationship with plants, enabling them to expand their potential to filter runoff water and absorb nutrients.
